The 47mm panel stays at 1.4 inches and the 43mm panel stays at 1.3 inches across all three generations.p><p class=”wpblockparagraph“>Brightness is the change that applies at every size. Garmin rates the Fenix 9 Pro AMOLED panel at up to 3,000 nits and describes it as twice as bright as the Fenix 8 AMOLED panel. Garmins specification pages for the Fenix 8 and Fenix 8 Pro AMOLED do not publish a nit figure. Fenix 8 Pro MicroLED is brighter again, rated at up to 4,500 nits using more than 400,000 individual LEDs, though this display technology is not available on Fenix 9 Pro at launch.p><h2 class=”wpblockheading“>Case materials, bezel and lensh2><p class=”wpblockparagraph“>Every Fenix 9 Pro uses a full titanium case and a titanium bezel, with a sapphire crystal lens on AMOLED versions and a Power Sapphire lens on MIP Solar versions. Fenix 8 Pro, in both AMOLED and MicroLED form, uses a fibre reinforced polymer case with a titanium bezel and a sapphire crystal lens, itself an upgrade over the base Fenix 8, which uses the same polymer case with a stainless steel or titanium bezel and either Corning Gorilla Glass or sapphire crystal depending on edition.p><p class=”wpblockparagraph“>ComfortFit fabric bands are new to Fenix 9 Pro and were not offered on Fenix 8 Pro. At 47mm, smartwatch mode runs to up to 18 days on Fenix 9 Pro, against 15 days, with 8 days always on, for Fenix 8 Pro, and 16 days, with 7 days always on, for the plain Fenix 8. Garmin has not published a separate always on figure for Fenix 9 Pro. Low power or battery saver mode reaches 24 days on Fenix 9 Pro, against 19 days on Fenix 8 Pro and 23 days on the plain Fenix 8. Maximum battery GPS mode, the clearest point of comparison since Garmin renamed several of the shorter GPS tracking modes for Fenix 9 Pro, reaches 87 hours against 70 hours on Fenix 8 Pro and 81 hours on the plain Fenix 8. Expedition mode reaches 18 days against 14 days on Fenix 8 Pro and 17 days on the plain Fenix 8.p><p class=”wpblockparagraph“>At 51mm, smartwatch mode reaches up to 31 days on Fenix 9 Pro, against 27 days, with 15 days always on, for Fenix 8 Pro, and 29 days, with 13 days always on, for the plain Fenix 8. Low power mode reaches 42 days against 34 days and 41 days. Maximum battery GPS mode reaches 151 hours against 123 hours and 145 hours. Expedition mode reaches 31 days on Fenix 9 Pro, level with the plain Fenix 8 and 7 days ahead of Fenix 8 Pro.p><p class=”wpblockparagraph“>At 43mm, where there is no Fenix 8 Pro for comparison, smartwatch mode is unchanged at up to 10 days on both Fenix 9 Pro and the plain Fenix 8. Low power mode is unchanged at 15 days, and expedition mode is unchanged at 10 days. Maximum battery GPS mode edges up slightly, from 49 hours to 50 hours.p><p class=”wpblockparagraph“>Fenix 8 Pro MicroLED stands apart. Despite using the larger 51mm case, which supports 27 days of smartwatch battery on the AMOLED Pro, Garmin rates the MicroLED version at only up to 10 days in smartwatch mode, 4 days with the display always on, because the higher brightness draws considerably more power. In its best accuracy GPS mode, MicroLED is rated at up to 34 hours, and in plain GPS only mode at up to 44 hours, both below the AMOLED Pros comparable figures at the same case size.p><p class=”wpblockparagraph“>Storage rises from 32GB on both the plain Fenix 8 and Fenix 8 Pro, including the MicroLED version, to 64GB across every Fenix 9 Pro configuration, including MIP Solar.p><h2 class=”wpblockheading“>Connectivity and satellite featuresh2><p class=”wpblockparagraph“>The plain Fenix 8 connects over Bluetooth, ANT+ and WiFi only. Fenix 8 Pro, in both AMOLED and MicroLED form, added an LTE and satellite radio stack as standard, enabling two way messaging, LTE LiveTrack, interactive SOS and location check ins through an inReach subscription; every Fenix 8 Pro unit ships with this hardware, whether or not the subscription is active. Fenix 9 Pro takes a different approach: Garmins UK product listing shows an inReach connectivity option that can be switched on or off at the point of purchase, with the non satellite version reverting to plain Bluetooth, ANT+ and WiFi connectivity, similar to the base Fenix 8. The core software and hardware features match the AMOLED Pro; the differences are the display, the solar charging ring, and the resulting battery gains, along with a small increase in thickness and weight.p><p class=”wpblockparagraph“>The 47mm MIP display measures 1.3 inches at 260 x 260 pixels, smaller and lower resolution than the 47mm AMOLEDs 1.4 inch, 454 x 454 panel. The 51mm MIP display measures 1.4 inches at 280 x 280 pixels, against the 51mm AMOLEDs 1.5 inch, 466 x 466 panel. The MIP models use a Power Sapphire lens rather than plain sapphire crystal.p><p class=”wpblockparagraph“>Battery life is the reason to choose MIP Solar. At 47mm, smartwatch mode rises from 18 days on AMOLED to 21 days on MIP Solar, or up to 34 days with sufficient sun exposure. Maximum battery GPS mode rises from 87 hours to 132 hours, or up to 740 hours with solar. At 51mm the gap without sun is smaller, since AMOLED already reaches 31 days in smartwatch mode against 30 days for MIP Solar before solar charging is counted, rising to up to 57 days with sun. Maximum battery GPS mode at 51mm rises from 151 hours on AMOLED to 186 hours on MIP Solar, or up to 1,000 hours with solar. Garmins solar figures assume all day wear with three hours per day of outdoor sun at 50,000 lux.p><h2 class=”wpblockheading“>Fenix 8 Pro MicroLED in detailh2><p class=”wpblockparagraph“>Fenix 8 Pro MicroLED uses a separate display technology from both AMOLED and MIP, available only as a 51mm titanium model in a single colourway. Garmin rates its brightness at up to 4,500 nits, using more than 400,000 individual LEDs, ahead of the 3,000 nit figure quoted for Fenix 9 Pro AMOLED. Resolution is 454 x 454 pixels, the same as the 51mm Fenix 8 Pro AMOLED panel, on a 1.4 inch display, smaller than the 1.5 inch panel fitted to the 51mm Fenix 9 Pro AMOLED.p><p class=”wpblockparagraph“>The MicroLED model is thicker and heavier than the equivalent AMOLED Pro, at 17.5mm and 68g for the case alone, against 16.5mm and 65g case only for the 51mm Fenix 8 Pro AMOLED. Aside from the display, case dimensions, weight and battery life, the sensors, software and satellite connectivity match the 51mm Fenix 8 Pro AMOLED.p><p class=”wpblockparagraph“>Garmin has not extended MicroLED technology to the Fenix 9 Pro range.
